Subject: Texas alcohol regulators warn against extortion scam
Businesses received letters claiming an observer witnessed violations of Texas alcohol laws, threatening to tell TABC if they didn't pay.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas beverage regulators have warned businesses that sell alcohol to beware of an extortion scam.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission on Monday announced retailers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have been targeted since October.  U.S. Postal Service inspectors are also helping investigate the scheme reported by several retailers licensed by the TABC.  Some businesses received letters claiming a third-party observer witnessed violations of Texas alcohol laws at the establishments. The letters threatened to report violations to the TABC unless the owner agreed to pay $500 via a cash card.  Commission officials say the letters are not connected to the TABC. Anyone receiving such a threat should contact the Austin-based agency.

AMERICAN LEGION CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

The American Legion’s Centennial year is 2019; it’s time for Posts to check out the website dedicated to the event.  The Centennial site is:  www.centennial.legion.org

This will let you sign in, register, share Post history; download a centennial guide and much more.  The last report from Department indicated that only 34 Posts in Texas had registered.  This is a great opportunity for your Post to share its legacy and become part of a national event.  Check it out!!

I’ve included an attachment to this newsletter that will help you write a Post history.  If you cannot locate a Post history, contact the District Commander and he can ask the District Historian to check the history collection and if there is a copy, he can furnish it to you.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] COIN Program

Good Morning,

Please share with your connections.  The COIN program has $35,978 to assist our Combat Veterans with this month.  Below is a guideline for our qualifications.  If you have any questions about the program I am more than happy to answer them for you.  I have enclosed our flyer for your distribution.  Thank you.

In order to qualify for the COIN project the Veteran must meet the following criteria:

The Veteran  must have an Expeditionary Medal or Campaign Medal listed amongst their awards.  Since every branch has a different way of annotating their DD214 we have Veterans that are combat veterans with neither a campaign or expeditionary medal (never got a medal placed under their awards) as long as their DD214 has them reflecting as being in an imminent danger area we will service them (this would be annotated under the remarks section).

The Veteran must also meet our income guidelines.  Our guidelines are based off of HUD AMI and will depend on the county and family size.  We must have a years’ worth of income and calculate it based off gross for anyone OVER the age of 18 residing in the home.  The counties that we service are: Dallas, Denton, Erath, Hood, Johnson, Palo Pinto, Parker, Somervell and Tarrant.

Please note the following:

We are a ONE time financial assistance

We can only cover up to $1800 (per Veteran)

All things we pay MUST be in the Veterans name (there are very limited circumstances to this)

We only assist with things that are PAST due excluding the following:

Car repair (fixed on a case by case basis)

Deposits (we do not cover application fees)

Hotels (case by case basis)

Day Care (case by case basis)

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today reminded individuals and businesses making year-end gifts to charity that several important tax law provisions have taken effect in recent years.

Fortunately we live in a state that operates on a consumption tax.  This is where the government operates on what you choose to spend, not what you earn, save or invest; and our posts qualify as tax exempt.

A HUGE thank you (which doesn't seem like near enough) to the Auxiliary, Riders, Sons, and Legionnaires of Mansfield Post 624. They graciously donated a total of $1,600 to the children of Lena Pope / Chapel Hill Academy. What an awesome display of community service, compassion, and care for our children - our nation's future leaders. I love you all so much and I'm blessed personally to know such an amazing group of people who I love working with. Thank you thank you thank you

December 13th

Snowball Express extends an invitation to the following:

Every day men and women of the armed forces return from grueling overseas deployments to be reunited with their awaiting families.  But not everyone will have that chance – some of our brave service members make the ultimate sacrifice, and their families left behind are changed forever.  Snowball Express is a charity that honors our Nation’s fallen heroes by serving those children who will never be reunited with their mom or dad.  Since 2006, the mission of Snowball Express has been a simple, yet profoundly important one:  Provide hope and new happy memories to the children of fallen military heroes who have died while on active duty since 9/11.  We bring children together from all over the world for a fun filled four-day retreat, connecting them with other children who have experienced a similar loss.  Parents of children of the fallen tell us that their child is reserved, withdrawn, or unwilling to talk about their loss.  Participating in Snowball Express changes that, helping each child understand that they are not alone, and giving them the opportunity to share their feelings on losing something so precious, their parent.

On Sunday, December 13th, on Gendy Street from W Lancaster there will be an opportunity to turn out to show the Snowball Express families that their loss is honored and remembered.  At about 9:15 AM, a convoy of about 40 charter buses will arrive at Will Rogers Memorial Center, and off load about 1,850 children and a surviving parent for a day at the museums and Will Rogers Coliseum.  They will have a Walk of Gratitude along Gendy Street to the plaza in front of the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History where they will release a few thousand helium filled balloons skyward with notes to their lost loved ones.  We are encouraging the public to turn out and line Gendy Street from W. Lancaster to the museum plaza to cheer and show the love for these families.

As veterans we know the sense of loss of a comrade, and more importantly we understand the honor bound with our brothers and sisters, so let's all turn out to support the families they left behind.

VETERAN’S VILLAGE AT ARMED FORCES BOWL:  Have you heard about the Veteran’s Village at this year’s Armed Forces Bowl?  Veteran’s organizations are invited to be a part of the pre and post-game activities at the Veteran’s Village presented by the American Red Cross.  The village will serve as a place for military personnel, veterans and fans to gather in a central, fun-packed area just outside the stadium.  It will consist of tents, booths, tables and displays of different veteran and civic organizations and companies wishing to assist veterans.  You can reserve a space at no cost.  Additional details and registration form are in the attached.  Deadline to register is December 8th.  This is a great opportunity to get exposure for the American Legion Family, and let the community know how we serve our veterans, service members and community, as well as an opportunity to recruit new members.

December 31st - New Years Eve party.  Live music by Bo Brothers Bands (veterans!!); Tickets $15 each or $25 per couple ($20 and $30 at the door). Includes party favors, champagne toast, black eyed peas, and full midnight breakfast.

--- From Our District President:

October is a busy month for the American Legion Auxiliary 12th District.  Here are a few of the great activities taking place during the month of October.  Everyone is invited to come out, join the fun, and support these fantastic fund raising events.

Also, as a reminder . . .

Pre-Veterans Day Cookout – Help is needed:  On Thursday, October 29th, VA Clinic Voluntary Services will hold their annual Pre-Veterans Day Cookout at the Clinic.  Most of our current volunteers will be out of town on October 29th, so we desperately need Occasional volunteers to help serve cake.  That is also the 12th District’s day to operate the coffee cart.  If you are able to volunteer on this day, please contact Betty Heedley at 817-229-5903.

Volunteer Sign-Up:  In addition, Voluntary Services is very much in need of Regular volunteers.  The Regular volunteer program is designed for individuals that can commit to a regular schedule to volunteer.  Individual schedules can vary from a few hours every other week to a couple days per week.  The amount of time a volunteer comes in is based on the assignment and what they have available for time.  Regular volunteers are required to complete the fingerprinting sign-up process at the Dallas VA Hospital.  The next sign-up process at the Dallas VA Hospital is scheduled for Monday, October 5th.  If anyone is interested in serving as a Regular volunteer, please contact Betty Heedley at 817-229-5903.  Betty is a member of Benbrook Auxiliary Unit 297, and she serves as our Auxiliary Hospital Representative at the VA Clinic.  Betty will be available on October 5th to go with anyone interested in serving as a Regular volunteer.

His last wish is to see the Texans vs. Kansas City Chiefs that are playing here on 13 September. I would need two tickets (one for him and the other for the nurse). The training was at post 569 off of Felix Street in Fort Worth on Aug 8, 2015 from 10 a.m. until noon.

After action:

We ended up with 11 people. It was good!! Lots of information AND you can put in there that I have more resource info for the posts that didn’t show but they have come get it.  And a quote from me... “I am so excited the posts are realizing how important the Service Officer Position is. Your Service Officer is one of the Four Pillars of the American Legion all on their own!"

Thank you to the service officers from posts 60, 135, 626, 655, and 569. The training secession went extremely well today!!

Oratorical Request

School will start in just a few more days and it is time for Posts to turn their attention to supporting The American Legion Oratorical Competition.  The “Department of Texas 2015-2016 Objectives” specifically lists Oratorical Competition as one of the Americanism Programs in which all Posts are encouraged to participate.

Each year many inquires are received by the State Oratorical Chair, from National, of students wanting to participate and a list is needed of participating Posts so these inquires can be distributed in an expeditious manner.  To accomplish this task each Division Oratorical Chair is requested to contact each District Chair in their area and request they assemble a list of all participating Posts to include the name, email address and phone number of the Oratorical Chairs at each Post.

All information must be sent directly to: Barbara Hemmer at hemmtbh@yahoo.com.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!  Thank you.

Legionnaires, Ladies and Sons, Family All,

Here is an update on my current medical condition.  I am on 24/7 oxygen therapy and travel is greatly restricted, but I feel fine.  The next evaluation by my Pulmonologist is in late September and then I will have a plan going forward.  I have no problem doing online (web, hub, historian duties) as long as you provide information and pictures.

What we need

This situation emphasizes our need for an effective public relations person.  On the district level they can be from any of our organizations, ideally with representation from all.  It just takes people that enjoy writing press releases and articles about our events.  The person or team does not need to be retired, functions are normally held when folks can get there and write-ups can be submitted anytime on the internet.  We have lots of picture takers that can provide pictures.  Information can be posted on the web by the Historian, Hubmaster or Webmaster.  The PR team could also maintain a District Facebook page.

--- From the Department of Texas

Each week National forwards a Weekly Report, on their activities, to a limited list of department leaders on their activities.  This information is not on the Legion website and is only available if we distribute to our membership.  The information contained in these reports is important to all of our membership and we urge you to distribute so that everyone can be aware of what our national staff is doing and how it affects each of us.  Of special note in this weeks report is the efforts underway to reintroduce the flag bill.

Howdy Folks,

Howdy Folks,

Passing on details about a great event (rescheduled from May) that Bill and Christina are working with and getting orientated.

--- From Your Hubmaster:

Just home from the hospital clear of pneumonia but needing help with breathing.

Hope all had a great Independence Day; mine was spent with some wonderful folks at Arlington Memorial Hospital without whom I may not be writing this note.  Unfortunately this event is forcing me to make some major lifestyle changes and I will not be able to participate in activities or meetings for some time.  I should be able to continue doing all the online activities from home.

I will be sending this notice in several emails to inform organizations with projects in work the details for the person taking over the tasks.

We greatly appreciate all our friends.  For anyone wanting to help, we have great kids and kin so needs are covered and there are folks in need.  For anyone wanting to visit, my  Wife works nights (sleeps days), we arranged the house (junk) to accommodate oxygen hose without harm to wearer  and I want to relax without tidying up so please email.

Vietnam War 'Welcome Home' Event,

Sent: Wednesday, July 8, 2015 1:57 PM
Subject: Call for Volunteers for Vietnam War ‘Welcome Home’

Vietnam War 'Welcome Home' Supporters,

The following volunteer opportunities are in addition to info booths and/or parade support.  Please take a look and pass on to those who may be interested.

NAS Fort Worth JRB has partnered with the City of White Settlement to conduct the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War in the city's Veteran Park (8901 Clifford St.) on August 1.

All veterans and their families are invited to the installation where a grateful nation will thank and honor all U.S. veterans of the Vietnam War and our allies, including personnel who were held as POWs or who remain Missing in Action or unaccounted for, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the U.S. and to thank and honor the families of these veterans. We are anticipating over 3,000 veterans and guests to attend.

We've received many calls from our great neighbors in the community, asking how they can help/support.  Here are a few opportunities you may be interested in:

. Priority Number One:  Get the Word Out!  Please find the attached flyer and share it with as many veterans as possible.  Email, social media, or good old-fashion printing out and posting around areas of high veteran traffic.
. A total of eight Vietnam War Veterans from each service branch to serve as the Color Guard detail in the official ceremony (6 flag bearers for National Ensign, Army, USMC, USN, ASAF, USCG, and 2 riflemen).  Wearing your original uniform is definitely a plus, but respectful representation of your branch is more than acceptable.  Rigging and rifles will be supplied.
. Personal effects to be used in the "Fort Worth Firebase" Reenactment (Any old gear you've been hoarding in your seabag could help to make an authentic experience)
. Well Wishers for the 0900 Parade through city of White Settlement.  Show your patriotism as the parade rolls by.  (map route attached)
. Set-up/Tear-down support - tents, tables and chairs.
. Water/ice distro and trash.
. We will ALL be Good Will Ambassadors:  Sometimes, just being there is all the support you need.  Spontaneous conversations and sharing of experiences with our Vietnam War veterans could go a long way and would continue our efforts to truly "welcome home" these great Americans.

If you're interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please contact Rusty Baker, Base PAO, at (817) 782-7815 or rusty.baker@navy.mil for more information.

Subject: Presentations at the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum over Memorial Day Weekend

My name is Debbie Frick, and I am contacting the American Legion on behalf of Carina B. Morgan, the Volunteer Program Coordinator of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum.  The Presidential Library and Museum is hosting a series of docent talks about the Medal of Honor and its recipients to the attention of the members of the Military Officers Association of America and their families.   The next Medal of Honor presentations will be given over Memorial Day Weekend: Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m; Sunday, May 24th, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m; and Monday, May 25th, 2015 at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. The docent talks will be held in the classroom of the Presidential Library and Museum.  Admission to the docent talks is free.  More information about the talks is available at http://www.georgewbushlibrary.smu.edu/News-and-Events/Events.aspx

The Medal of Honor presentation is divided into two talks.  Visitors have the option of attending one or both talks. The total presentation time for each talk is approximately an hour.  The first talk features the symbolism, history, and recommendation process of the Medal of Honor.  While the second talk discusses the five men who received the Medal of Honor from President George W. Bush for their service in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The purpose of the Medal of Honor docent talks is threefold: 1) to educate the public about the Medal and our American heroes; 2) to honor the Medal of Honor recipients; and 3) to remember the sacrifices made on our behalf, so we can continue to exercise our freedoms as American citizens.

Sincerely,

Debbie Frick

5/4/15 District 12 Update

Howdy Folks,

Today, May the fourth (be with you) is International Star Wars Day.

Sending this out early because there is a lot happening.  Tuesday (tomorrow, today or yesterday) is the last day for early voting and Saturday is busy.

If going to the convention and have not registered, do it now so they have your information and a headcount.

If going to the base, the gate will open at 8 am for the public; to enjoy the entire event you need to be in the hanger by 9:30 am.  Volunteers and participants that have the color coded window placards from our committee representatives can get in early.  Patriot Guard should assemble per the Itinerary from Ride Captain Brian Liberty.

Boys State orientation is just 15 days away.

--- Happenings:

It was wonderful greeting about 80 Army Reserves back from a nine month deployment in Kuwait and Iraq.

We greeted the first group that came in last Sunday and it was covered by local channel CW33.

This reception got good coverage Sat. and Sun. on local Channels 5 and 11; and it was great to see Legion hats and Auxiliary shirts in the videos.

Chanel 11 mentioned that a local American Legion post was there to welcome them home.

Chanel 5 said they were “Met by family, the Local American Legion Post and White Settlement Fire Department”.

Just think, if not already eligible, these folks can all join the VFW now.  But wait, all I saw were American Legion shirts and hats.  So now I have to wonder what the Legion has to offer them beyond a waving flag and “thank You”.

--- This week:

May 4th (Monday) – VA Fort Worth Clinic Legion Family welcome table (volunteer now)

May 9th (Saturday) – Joint Election - Election Day

Division 1 Convention at the Southfork Hotel – Plano, TX – (registration, advertising and drawing)

If you can not make the convention here are two great events our Legion Posts are participating in:

All veterans and their families and friends are invited to an open house on at NAS Fort Worth JRB (Carswell Field) starting at 9:00 am where a grateful nation will thank and honor all U.S. veterans of the Vietnam War and our allies. (pdf) (jpg)

and

All Veterans and their guests are invited to an open house at the National Vietnam War Museum Mineral Wells (invitation)

Don’t forget Mothers Day on Sunday

From: Hill, Tina
Sent: Tuesday, April 21, 2015 9:18 AM
All,

Remember the Auxiliary District project to send “cooling bandanas” to the 300 soldiers of the 90th Aviation Support Battalion stationed in Kuwait?  They have completed their mission, and they are coming home.  This is your opportunity to participate in a “Welcome Home” event.  They are scheduled to arrive in two phases.  The first half of the Battalion is scheduled to arrive in buses this Sunday, April 26th at 10:00 am, at their Army Reserve Center located at 11280 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth 76108 (this is far west Fort Worth).  The second half of the Battalion will arrive the following Saturday, May 2nd.  Their command group will be part of the May 2nd arrival.

Please share this information with your Units and Posts.  Encourage them to load up their vehicles and come out to greet these soldiers.  Wear something to show you are a member of the American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary and bring hand flags to wave.  Let’s show these troops our appreciation for a job well done.

Subject: Texas Boys State

Greetings all;

This year we will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Texas Boys State.  The time for registration to attend Texas Boys State has arrived and is in high gear.  This outstanding American Legion program is worthy of the attention and consideration of all of our Posts.  The State of Texas has over 2400 High Schools - yet we only have 450 that are participating in the program.  Additionally, we have the Home Schooled and Private Schools from which to draw.

We are requesting that:

  1. Each Division Commander follow-up with each of the Districts in your area to ensure that their Boys State Chairman is working with all of the Post Boys State Chairs in their area to ask for a commitment on the number of statesmen they will be sending to Austin this June.
  2. Please relay that information back by reply to this email by no later than this Saturday, April 18.  We will assimilate all of the numbers and forward to the Boys State Chairman to give them an idea of what to expect.
  3. We only have 1100 beds this year and we are already running ahead of prior year entries — slots to attend are based on the first Posts to pay the tuition.

We should never leave a deserving and qualified High School Junior behind — if you have such an instance, please notify us so that we can make an effort to locate a sponsor.

Sadly and far too often, veterans who come to the clinic to receive care have not eaten.  Many of these veterans can’t afford all the food they need to be healthy.  We can help ensure they become healthier by providing supplies for the Voluntary Services food pantry.  Voluntary Services tries to keep food items on hand that are easy and quick to prepare.  They especially ask for microwaveable single serve products.

As resources permit, please bring donations of easy to prepare food items to the Spring Convention scheduled for Saturday, April 18th, at Fort Worth Post 569.  Arrangements will be made to deliver your donations to the clinic.  See the attached flyer for food items Voluntary Services keeps on hand for these hungry veterans.

Women’s Memorial Foundation seeks veterans to register

Dedicated in 1997, the memorial is the only national memorial honoring women who have served in our nation’s defense in all eras and in all services. It is located next to Arlington National Cemetery.

Registration is not automatic. Service women, past or present, must register themselves. People can also register women they know of who served. Memorial officials ask women to share their stories and encourage other service women to do the same.

Registration is free; however, people may make a donation. Visit www.womensmemorial.org  and click on “Membership” to register.

This is a reminder that final preparations are being taken for our visit from National on the 29th thru the 31st of January at Post 655. https://goo.gl/maps/fHDtq

The American Legion Department of Texas, District 12 with the help of National staff will be conducting a membership effort in our area Jan 29 to 31, 2015.  We will be reaching out to expired members, headquarters members and all other veterans about membership in local posts and V-A benefits.

We need your assistance!  You or any member of your Post that would take the time to help with this effort would be greatly appreciated.  Also, we will be transferring or signing up new members for posts within the district.  We will be doing DMS and Department Headquarters transfers over the phone, as well as making personal visits to expired members.  This is an extremely successful membership program of The American Legion.  If you have any questions or concerns about these members being signed up for your post please contact me.

This is an important effort to reach out to all wartime veterans; we need your post to take part in this effort.  Any amount of time you and your members can volunteer will help greatly.  Together we can make The American Legion District 12 stronger.

National, in an attempt to help us with membership, is sending a person here to give us a list of names, addresses and telephone numbers of veterans in our area that do not belong to the AL.  They will train us on how to make contact with these people and how to get them to sign. They have a list of more than 4,000 names and we are going to set up a phone bank and / or go knocking on doors.

We need bodies for this program, at least 3 or more members from each post in attendance to make calls and to knock on doors. Each will need a cell phone and charger.  The Department and National will have their eyes on us and they are expecting a large turn out and a very successful three days. We will start training at 8:30 on each day at Haltom City Post 655, 2817 Carson St, Haltom City, TX 76117.

Note about ORATORICAL CONTEST

This is the last chance to get your candidate in the District Oratorical Contest (or to observe so you can plan for next year).

This is a terrific opportunity for a teenager to get recognition and scholarship money.  Each public high school, private school, charter school, and home schooled, with grades 9 thru 12 that is sponsored by their local American Legion Post, is allowed to advance 1 contestant to the district level.  The American Legion, Department of Texas, Oratorical Program Finals, will be held Monday, February 16, 2015 (February 23 ALTERNATE) at The Denton County Courthouse in Denton, Texas.

The Department will award a $2,000 scholarship to the college of his/her choice; 2nd place – $1,500 scholarship; 3rd place $1,000 scholarship; and 4th place $500 scholarship (provided the winner enters college within 1 year after graduation from high school).  The Department Champion will receive an additional $1,500 scholarship from National provided he/she participates in the Quarter Finals Contest and an additional $1,500 scholarship from National if the participant advances to the Semi Finals Contest and does not advance to the National Finals. Competitors in the National Finals are awarded scholarships as follows; 1st – $18,000; 2nd – $16,000; 3rd – $14,000.  Details and forms at http://txlegion.org/programs/oratotical/

Note about VW 50 COMMITTEE

NAS Fort Worth JRB has been authorized by the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program for the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.  This program will extend over a 10 year period with at least 2 events a year.  For starters no DoD funding is provided so the event must be self sustaining with full support from the base.

The initial meeting in December of 2014 was to establish communications with all Texas Veteran-based military support organizations as a means to inform you of upcoming events.  It is also intended to identify one local North Texas representative from each organization and offer the opportunity to serve on our planning committee.  This will enable each organization to have an equal voice in planning, coordination and implementation of NAS Fort Worth JRB's proposed FY'15 event.

The base Commander would like to have the first event May 9, 2014 (a Saturday).  One suggestion that he liked was a BBQ and possibly a parade with classic cars (Viet Nam Veteran passengers) through the base and possibly the local community adjoining the base.  If more events fall in line they may be added.

About 20 VSO’s were represented with lots of discussion and suggestions.  The next meeting is on Jan. 20, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Navy Operation Support Center Conference Room (Bldg 1803, Room 104).  Meetings will be planned for the third Tuesday of each month.
