--- From Your Hubmaster:

Report on meeting at NAS Fort Worth yesterday (Tues. Dec. 16).  On Jan. 11, I can plan to be at Post 838 before the Oratorical Contest if any one wants more information (please let me know).

NAS Fort Worth JRB has been authorized by the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program for the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.

This program will extend over a 10 year period with at least 2 events a year.  For starters no DoD funding is provided so the event must be self sustaining with full support from the base.

This meeting was to establish communications with all Texas Veteran-based military support organizations as a means to inform you of upcoming events.  It is also intended to identify one local North Texas representative from each organization and offer the opportunity to serve on our planning committee.  This will enable each organization to have an equal voice in planning, coordination and implementation of NAS Fort Worth JRB's proposed FY'15 event.

The base Commander would like to have the first event May 9, 2014 (a Saturday).  One suggestion that he liked was a BBQ and possibly a parade with classic cars (Viet Nam Veteran passengers) through the base and possibly the local community adjoining the base.  If more events fall in line they may be added.

About 20 VSO’s were represented with lots of discussion and suggestions.  The next meeting is on Jan. 20, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Navy Operation Support Center Conference Room (Bldg 1803, Room 104).  Meetings will be planned for the third Tuesday of each month.

--- From the Department of Texas

The Office of the Department of Texas will be closed from Wednesday December 24th through Friday January 2nd. The last date for processing any membership transactions will be Tuesday December 23rd which means they will have to be in the mail by Thursday December 18th at the latest.   You are requested to still process any membership transactions and send them in but just remember they won't be processed until January 5, 2015 at the earliest.

As you plan your holiday calendar, do not forget the 12th District Christmas party scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 15th at Bedford Post 379.

ALL members of our 12th District Family are invited and welcome to attend.  Please pass the word to your Unit members and American Legion families.

Everyone is asked to bring a side dish or dessert, and we will have a Chinese gift exchange.  (See attached flyer for additional details).

In the meantime, let us not forget we have much to be thankful for, and we owe much of that to the efforts and sacrifices of our Veterans, Service Members, and their families.

Please be mindful at this annual time of giving thanks that there are many families separated due to military service around the world.  As you enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday, set aside a moment to be thankful for those in faraway places who help to make your celebration possible and keep us all safe.

May you all be blessed, and I hope to see each and everyone of you at our District Christmas Party!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Legion: No amnesty for illegal immigrants

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 20, 2014) -- The head of the nation’s largest veterans service organization today questioned the wisdom of the White House putting politics above national security if it carries through with its plan to give amnesty to as many as 5 million illegal immigrants through an executive order.

“At a time when ISIS, al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations are killing innocent Americans, it makes no sense to let our guard down and send a message that the United States is an open, soft target,” American Legion National Commander Michael D. Helm said. “A message was sent during the recent elections, and it clearly wasn’t that Americans want amnesty. The American Legion urges the president in the strongest possible terms to put our security, and our citizens’ interests and wishes, ahead of providing amnesty for millions of immigrants here illegally.”

Helm – who is on a Far East tour that includes Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines – was just as adamant in stating that The American Legion fully supports legal immigration. “The United States has benefited enormously from citizens who have obeyed the law in the journey to becoming Americans,” he said. “There have been many prominent Legionnaires who legally migrated from other countries, including one of my recent predecessors, Fang Wong. I just visited with a new American citizen who is the wife of an American government official working in Laos. Her first husband was killed by communists in a re-education camp. She is one of the most patriotic Americans that I have met. My sister-in-law is a U.S. citizen from Panama.

“These patriotic Americans help make our country great. One common characteristic is that they have earned their citizenship the legal way. In fact, we have reached out to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to offer our help in bringing immigrants to full citizenship. Rewarding illegal immigration is a slap in the face to those who have obeyed the law and patiently went through the process.”

Friday, October 17th (also see event on Saturday below)

To the 12th District:

Fort Worth VA Outpatient Clinic Voluntary Services has reached out to the 12th District for assistance.

Voluntary Services uses donations to provide the veterans who receive care at the clinic hygiene products, food items, baby items, phone cards, gas cards, clothing, undergarments, small appliances, supplies for the coffee cart and kiddie cart, and much more.

On Friday, October 17th, Voluntary Services will be holding a fundraiser at the clinic, and they are in need of raffle items such as movie passes, Walmart and restaurant gift cards, gift baskets, baby items, any type of gift item, etc.  If you are able to provide raffle items, you can drop them off at the clinic’s Voluntary Services any time between now and October 17th during business hours.

On Wednesday, November 5th, Voluntary Services will hold a Pre Veteran’s Day Celebration from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.  They will be having a cookout for approximately 750 people and will begin serving at 11:00 am.  Volunteers are needed to help set up.  They are also requesting desserts.  Desserts must be individually wrapped.

Voluntary Services also maintains a food pantry.  Too often, veterans who come to the clinic to receive care have not eaten.  They try to keep food items on hand that are easy and quick to prepare.  They especially need items in foam insulated containers such as Ramen Noodles and Chef Boyardee products, and canned Vienna sausages.  This is an ongoing need, and these items can be dropped off at the clinic any time during business hours.

Assisting the VA Clinic is a great opportunity to work our mission as a veterans support organization.  Please do all you can to provide continued support to the Clinic.

Ladies,

Attached is an invitation to participate in the Massing Of The Colors (MOTC) to be held on Sunday, November 9th, 2:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1000 Penn Avenue, Ft. Worth.  If you have never attended or participated in the MOTC, I encourage you to do so.  This is a very moving ceremony held each year on the Sunday before Veterans Day.  It is a patriotic ceremony that demonstrates our support for the Colors of the United State of America.  Further explanation of the ceremony is provided in the invitation.

In order to participate in the ceremony, two members from your Unit will carry the flags (1 for the American flag and 1 for the Auxiliary banner).  Additional members of your Unit are also welcome to attend the ceremony.  Participation in the ceremony is not difficult.  Everyone participating in the ceremony will be instructed to line up and each Unit enters the church in pairs.  All you have to do is follow the person in front of you.  It is truly an inspirational and moving procession of flags.

If you wish to participate in the procession of flags, you are asked to RSVP by October 21st.  See the instructions in the invitation.  I would LOVE to see all the Units of the 12th District participate in this ceremony.  Participation in this ceremony would fall under the ALA Americanism Program.

Let me know if you have any questions about this ceremony.  I hope to see you there.

Our new Freeway/Tollway will be ready to open early October and plans are underway for a big celebration.  Parades usually attract lots of media attention.

Do we have any Post that could supply a honor guard, drum and bugle corps, or other attention grabbing device short of Tanks, Ships or Planes..  An F22 or F35 flyover would be good, even FiFi the B29 would be good.   I hope to be on the parade committee.

We do have a large Riders contingent; they always look good in a parade.

--- From Our District Adjutant:

Commanders, Vice Commanders, and Adjutants,

The new membership year has arrived.  The goal for the District is 3958 members.  The goals for each Post are on the Department website, www.txlegion.org.  Go down the left side of the home page to membership, then current report.  At the top of the page are numbers click on 12, then find tour Post.  Although the 1st Vice is the Chairperson of the membership committee it is the responsibility of each member to recruit.  A good source of local members not in a Post is, mylegion.org, Each Post Adjutant should have access to it, if you don’t please contact me and I will help you get access.  On the home page, on the left, are members in your area.  Click on then put in the zip code of the post and the radius you want to go out.  The list will give you current members and past due members.  Remember if they are in the at-large Post and dropped out they may not have been given a call to join a local Post, just ask.  Wednesday September 3, 2014 is the Target Date of 50%.

We are having a District meeting at Post 626 on September 8, 2014, 1900.  Please be in attendance for this year’s schedule is being discussed. It is also time to elect your District convention delegates for the October Convention.  Delegate Certification forms are on the Department website under conventions, fall convention.

The new school year has started, now is the time to get out to the schools to recruit Oratorical contestants.  The contests start in November so let’s give these young men and woman enough time to prepare.  Last year there was only one Post to enter candidates to the District competition, let do better this year.

Subject: A vet that needs our help

I received this email from Daniel, he is a member of our post 60 for 7 years.  Please pass this request on.

I spent 9&1/2 hours undergoing major heart surgery at the Dallas VA hospital.
My wife can no longer work due to health problems. I am on Social Security Disability. Allowed to earn only so much.
Laura and I are living off our credit cards the last 8 weeks I've been off work.
I could find nothing at American Legion website that says there is any financial help.

If you can go to www.giveforward.com  and search for Daniel and Laura Medical bill, read the
short story, and help, please do so. And if possible spread the word as far and wide as you can, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, God Bless and Semper Fi. Hope to see you guys soon.

From Bill Ray, Mansfield Post 624 Commander

Just wanted each and everyone to know that we have a new Boys Nation Vice
President from the great state of Texas Mr. Louis "Louie" Lombardo.
  Job
well done on his part.

From Janet Lombardo (Louie’s Mom)

I just thought I would give you the latest update on Louie while he is in Washington D.C. this week.
He is having a wonderful time and really embracing this experience.  He has gotten to experience D.C. in such a unique way because all involved are so patriotic.
Out of the 98 boys attending Boys Nation they have narrowed it to four.

They nominated 2 candidates for Vice President and 2 for President (one from each party for each position).  Louie is one of the two boys nominated for Vice President. He will be debating his opponent in a 45 minute debate and must give a 10  minute speech tomorrow available to view live online at legion tv followed by the voting/election results.

This year will mark the 16th year since its resurrection from the 50’s. In the 15 years since its inception in 1999, the NALC has graduated 629 Legionnaires with 55 having held or currently holding National appointments. But, more importantly, 142 have held or are currently holding district and department positions.

Applicants are required to complete an application (posted at http://www.legion.org/college) which includes a brief history of their education, work, military, volunteer, and Legion experiences. A brief essay is also required explaining why they wish to attend NALC. All applications should be forwarded to the Texas State Adjutant, Bill West at billw@txlegion.org no later than July 7th, 2014.   The Department Training Committee will vote on the application at their committee meeting at the Department Convention. Last year, our largest class, saw 56 NALC alumni created and return to their respective departments and posts energized.

--- Motorcycle raffle

From: Robin Schultz <rschultz196012@gmail.com>

First, let me introduce myself to those whom I have not yet met.  My name is Robin Schultz, and myself and my husband, Robert Allen, are PFUL members of Bakersfield Post 26 in California.  We have recently relocated to Bedford, TX, and have had the opportunity to visit Posts 379 and 516 since we have been here.

My former functions with the Auxiliary included Fundraising, Poppy Chairman, Veterans Day Parade Coordinator, Historian, and 2nd Vice.  And as we all should be, an active community supporter.  Which brings me to the reason I am emailing today.

My parents live in Cloudcroft, NM.  My father has been instrumental in helping to form a charter of The Moose Lodge there.  Just established in 2012.  As a fundraiser, The Moose Lodge is raffling off a 2006 Harley Davidson Sportster I am attaching a flyer with the information, and I am listed at the bottom as a local contact, if anyone here is interested in getting tickets.  Only 800 tickets are available, and they are only $20 each.  An unheard-of low amount for a motorcycle raffle. Per Legion.org, each of your Posts state they have a Riders Chapter.  And if that is not longer true, you still may have members who ride motorcycles.  All I ask is that you share the attached flyer.  If anyone is interested, just have them contact myself.

The flyer does state that the winner is responsible for picking up the cycle.  No problem, as I can have my parents take it, and I will be glad to take the winner over to bring it back to Texas.  I even have a trailer to haul it in, if necessary.

I appreciate your consideration of assisting this newly formed non-profit organization.

Respectfully,

Robin Schultz

Since the District Riders are going to escort the Boys State bus, (this Sunday) we have tried to get in touch with the Girls State bus...
After some research, the Girls State bus will be leaving from the Winn Bus Company on Esters in Irving.  There is only one bus for all the girls in N. Texas so they will coming from all over to get on the bus.

We need to find out if there is any interest in escorting the Girls bus.  Granted, it's on Sunday, June 15th (Father's Day).   It will leave early.  I know, I know.... but we just need to know if there's any interest in proceeding with this.  If so I will post times and address.

I would appreciate you letting me know by email if you are interested.

4/23/14 District 12 Update

Howdy Folks,

Attention Commanders, Presidents and other IRS reporter’s Important reminder from the March Department Hubmaster report.

Urgent IRS Notice: Just this week, the National Headquarters has learned that the IRS has a new form required for EVERY enterprise with an EIN.  That means all corporations, incorporated and non incorporated posts and tax exempt organizations.  Whenever there is a change of address or change in the person in charge, the new person in charge must now file the IRS Form 8822-B.  This is a basic form that looks like a “Change of Address” form.  What they really want to know is the NAME of the “RESPONSIBLE PARTY.”  This could be the post commander or adjutant or treasurer, or whoever has a level of control over the funds. This form must be filed by MARCH 1, 2014, if you have not told the IRS the identity of the Responsible Party and then again within 60-days of whenever your Responsible Party changes. Click on the following link to access IRS Form 8822-B http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8822b.pdf.

All questions should be directed to Robin McPeters at: 214-803-3447 or 903-447-9050

--- From the Department of Texas

From the Department Training Committee

Three years ago the Department Long Range Planning Committee tasked the Department Training Committee with developing and maintaining a Trainers & Mentors list.  The purpose of the list is so that we might have a knowledgeable reference base in each Division/District of persons we can go to that are capable of training/mentoring on a variety of American Legion topics that will further enhance our training efforts and result in membership growth.

Since that time the members of the Training Committee have worked diligently to build this list, and our efforts continue in that regard.  A recent review of the names on the list revealed that some of our most valuable resources were not on the list; our members with the necessary skills and talents.  We are thinking that this might be because we, as a Committee, have never asked specifically for you to add your name to the list.  Please consider this opportunity to further serve by replying to this email.

To be considered, the information we need is your:  Post Number, Phone Number, Preferred Email address, and your subject(s) of expertise and experience.  Also, indicate if you want to serve as a Trainer or a Mentor or both.  There will be very little if any travel involved as that is one of the purposes of having local help available as needed.  The list is privileged, not distributed and available only to the members of the Training Committee.

Thank you for your service to Our Country and for continuing to serve The American Legion.

To add your name to this list or for more information, reply to:

Fred Rogers, (for the Training Committee) 972-977-9342 frrtx@icloud.com
